Khruangbin at Arizona Financial Theatre

The Arizona Financial Theatre is uber excited to welcome Khruangbin and John Carroll Kirby to the stage on Tuesday, May 20th, for a concert bound to be filled with eclectic sounds and interstellar vibes. 

Khruangbin, which means “airplane” in thai, is a Surf rock trio hailing from Houston Texas. The band, composed of lead guitarist Mark Speer, vocalist Laura Lee Ochoa, and bassist Donald Johnson, is renowned around the globe and often praised for their unique blend of soul rock and psychedelia. The band has humble beginnings, with guitarist Speer and Johnson meeting in a church gospel band and playing with each other in that capacity for years. They eventually linked up outside of the pulpit, and both fell in love with each other's extensive knowledge of music and sounds from across the world. Speer met Ochoa a few years later, and they soon went on tour with each other while playing as guitarist for Yppah and opening for Bonobo. After the tour, Speer was determined to begin his own sound - and Khruangbin was born. In a very Jesus Christ fashion, Mark and Laura Lee developed some of their first synths and sounds together while testing material out in a barn in Burton, Texas. They still record in that barn to this day, and they describe their creative process as formulaic while still being experimental. Khruangbin are the kings and queens of new age psyche-wave and chill rock, and have toured extensively to show for it - including in locations like The U.K. Thailand, France, Canada, and soon- right here in Phoenix’s Financial Theatre.

The group will be joined by John Carroll Kirby, the west coast producer and pianist who has worked with A-List artists across the industry - including Solange, Remi Wolf, Miley Cyrus, Harry Styles, and Frank Ocean. He took up piano at a young age and studied Jazz at The University of Southern California, and has released music under the alias Drool in the mid 2010s. His hard work saw him earn spots as producers for Solange and Blood Orange’s records, and he has earned Grammys and platinum plaques under multiple artists that he has worked with.
