Arizona Speaker Series Tickets
Arizona Financial Theatre | Phoenix, Arizona
The Arizona Speaker Series that’s being held at the Arizona Financial Theater in Phoenix, Arizona, will continue into 2025. One of the first speakers of the year may just be the most impactful of the whole series. With luminaries like Hillary Clinton being part of the line-up in Arizona, it may be hard to think that a Jesuit Priest would be a more interesting watch. That’s just because not every priest is like Father Greg Boyle. The LA-based religious figure was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom thanks to his work helping rehabilitate local gang members through his charity project, Homeboy Industries. He’ll be holding a talk at the Financial Theater in Phoenix on Tuesday, January 14th, 2025.
Naturally, many people will second-guess the idea of going to see a priest speak. Fr. Boyle does a great job of leaving his condition as a clergyman as a secondary feature in these talks. This ensures that his life story and the stories of the people he’s helped really come to the surface. Fr. Boyle’s idea of developing Homeboy Industries came to fruition in 1988 under the name Jobs for a Future. The idea was to create a youth program to help young people in the Boyle Heights region of Los Angeles escape gang life. In a sense, the perfect way that Fr. Boyle sought to do that was to create different job opportunities that could help former inmates who would have trouble finding work elsewhere. Today, the project has grown immensely, helping thousands of people along the way. They run café’s bakeries, and even developed their brand of chips and salsa. Homeboy Industries has proven that there are effective ways to get people off the streets and away from a life of crime. This talk is hopefully one that can help create more of these solutions.
What truly makes Fr. Boyle’s speeches so impactful is his ability to delve into the human side of those who have come through the program. In most situations, these were young folks who were in a very dire position. Fr. Boyle’s youth program has proven very effective in reintegrating many of the former inmates, for example, into civilian life in a way that the prison system certainly has failed to do. Obviously, there are some Christian themes that will likely come up as part of the talk. As mentioned, however, Fr. Boyle does a great job of keeping the focus on elements that won’t turn off the part of his audience that isn’t at the Arizona Financial Theater to hear a sermon.
This event promises to be a refreshing change of pace within the Arizona Speaker Series. While most of the speakers carry a heavy political weight, Fr. Boyle will be on stage to share a story that really has nothing to do with politics. As the event draws closer, there’s a good chance that more seats within the Arizona Financial Theater will open up for this mid-January date.
