Say what you want about John Oliver, but the king of political commentary is a highly-influential voice in American politics, culture, and policymaking. He approaches worldwide issues with humor, but viewers often value his opinions. His exemplary work with The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Bugle, Political Animal, and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver has earned him numerous accolades. During his seven-year gig with The Daily Show, Oliver has won three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series. His work as a British correspondent for the show ended in 2013, and he moved on to lead his own Late Night talk and news satire program, Last Week Tonight, with John Oliver. The critically-acclaimed show won a whopping 24 Primetime Emmy Awards from 2016 to 2022. Meanwhile, Oliver’s amazing work with his program also earned eight Producers Guild of America Awards. In 2010, Oliver won a Writers Guild of America Award for his work on The Daily Show. Several years later, he would win six more of these awards for Last Week Tonight.
John Oliver entered the limelight as a stand-up comedian. He appeared on-screen in various TV shows and films during his early years. By 2001, he performed his first major stand-up gig at Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The festival’s Comedy Zone featured late-night performances of up-and-coming comedians. He returned to perform in the festival for the next two years before scoring the gig as co-host of Political Animal with Andy Zaltzman.
In 2006, Oliver became the Senior British Correspondent of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. After getting the job, he flew from London to New York and appeared on camera the next day. During his time in North America, Oliver would perform stand-up in the local comedy district in New York City. By 2008, Oliver made his debut in Comedy Central. His first special with the network was titled John Oliver: Terrifying Times. After this amazing breakthrough, Comedy Central ordered six more episodes and called in John Oliver’s New York Stand-up Show.
In 2014, Oliver began hosting Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. The HBO comedy and satire new program was well-received by many viewers. Since its premiere, the series has aired over 250 episodes and is now broadcasted in multiple countries.
