As one of the pioneers, Wizkid has helped put Afrobeats on the map, paving the way for many new artists from Africa to gain worldwide recognition. "Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun," formed the group the Glorious Five at the age of 11 and started performing. As time went on, he would make it big by producing studio albums and touring worldwide.
In 2009, he signed a deal with Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E.), and his debut album, Superstar, released in 2011, featured the hit single "Holla at Your Boy," which brought a lot of commercial success for the young up-and-comer. Later hits included "Don't Dull" and "Tease Me."
Following up his debut album's success, he released his second studio effort, "Ayo," which gave the world six mega singles, with the standout being "Jaiye Jaiye."
Once his initial deal ended with E.M.E., he would link up with the iconic rapper, Drake, and the two collaborated on the song, "One Dance," featuring UK's Kyla. It gave him the taste of his first truly international success, and the song went straight to number 1 on the US Hot 100 chart compiled by Billboard as well as in many other countries. It also put him in the Guinness Book of World Records.
RCA also took close notice of what was going on and offered him a contract covering several albums, which helped him launch his third studio offering, "Sounds from the Other Side." It came out in 2017 and also featured several hot singles.
His list of collaborators grew to contain huge names such as, Calvin Harris, which culminated in a song called "Checklist" featuring Normani. The song was a breakout success and went to number one on Billboard's Digital Song Sales Chart.
2020 saw his fourth album, "Made in Lagos," come out, and it too did wonders for the artist. It was well received by critics and topped Billboard's World Album Chart. It also gave fans the hit single, "Essence," which went on to become the first Nigerian song to claim the number one position on the Billboard Hot 100.
Now he has a new album, "More Love, Less Ego," and based on all of his amazing achievements thus far, this one is going be pure magic. Plus a Stateside tour to support it means we get to enjoy one of Afrobeat's best musicians. So grab your tickets now!!!
